The President’s Award is very popular every year especially with the Transition Year students. It is Ireland’s most prestigious and respected individual award programme. It is a Challenge from the president of Ireland for students to “Dream Big and realise their potential”.

Gaisce’s aim is for students to develop confidence within their own abilities and improve their own wellbeing. This year they will be undertaking the Bronze Medal Award by completing various different activities.

Students must complete 4 challenge areas and these include:

  • Personal Skill – development of a personal goal like piano skills/ guitar/ choir/ public speaking etc.
  • Community Involvement – voluntary work in charity shops/nursing homes/homework club etc.
  • Physical Recreation – individual or team sports/ gym development/ martial arts etc.
  • Adventure Journey – challenging hike/walk/cycle with an overnight stay where students must cook and cater for themselves.

The entire experience is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their extra-curricular skills and their social skills in a non-formal and non-competitive way. It’s a time where students learn to commit and follow through on each area of the award and develop a sense of pride in their own accomplishments.
